In a battle of unbeaten South-West Conference rivals, Newtown High Schoolâs boysâ lacrosse team defeated visiting New Fairfield 12-8 at Blue and Gold Stadium on April 29. Newtown improved to 8-0 and New Fairfield walked away at 8-1 overall.
Justin Brophy scored three times and had an assist, Trey Trudell had two goals and three assists, Colby Summerlin scored twice, and Lewis Thompson added a tally and two helpers to lead the Nighthawks. Newtown had eight different goal scorers as Will Northrop, Dan Hebert, Brendan McNamara, and Dan Sclafani also found the net. McNamara won 15 of the 23 faceoffs he took for the Nighthawks to give the hosts an edge in possession.
âWe just came out and played our game. We havenât changed anything all season. We did exactly what we wanted to do on offense â move the ball, share the ball, let six guys be a part of the offense. On defense, we brought that physicality we look for and we just hustled,â Newtown Coach Glenn Adams said.
Newtown shocked New Fairfield to win the SWC title a couple of years ago, but has not been able to find a way to knock off the Rebels in regular season matchups for the past handful of years.
âItâs a good feeling to get them in the regular season and hopefully weâll get to see them again in the postseason,â Summerlin said.
Adams said the Hawks wonât get rattled by the challenge of trying to continue the winning streak given that the team has been focused â from day one â on not getting ahead of itself and taking it a game at a time.
âIt was a good win for us. It was good to keep momentum going,â Trudell added.
The Nighthawks kept rolling in a 19-3 win over Immaculate of Danbury on May 3. Thompson scored three times and played the role of setup man with a ten-assist explosion. Trudell had four goals and Summerlin netted three in the triumph. Newtown goaltender Brandon Body stopped seven of the eight shots he faced in the half he played between the posts.
