Claude William Lewis

Claude William “Bill” Lewis, 80, of Dover Plains, N.Y., died April 27 at New Milford Hospital. He was the husband of Jean Mary Holland Lewis.

In addition to his wife of 60 years, he is survived by two sons, James Lewis and his wife, Mary, of Newtown, and William Lewis and wife, Dorian, of Chestertown, Md.; a daughter, Sandra Phillips and husband, Tony, of New Milford, Conn.; two brothers, Charles and Donald, both of Newtown; three sisters, Marian of Newtown, Jeanette of Englewood, Fla., and Martha of Orange, Conn.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr Lewis was born in Danbury, March 4, 1925, son of the late Claude Herman and Genevieve Andrews Lewis.

He was a World War II veteran, serving with the United States Navy. He met and married his wife in Fremantle, Australia, in 1945, and brought his bride back to his hometown of Newtown.

Mr Lewis was a mail carrier in Newtown for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member and past commander of Charles Howard Peck VFW Post #308 in Newtown, and an avid hunter and fisherman.

Funeral services took place on April 30 at the Lillis Funeral Home, New Milford. Private burial in Newtown Village cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.
