Celiac Walk And Picnic May 14
Celiac Walk And Picnic May 14
NORTH HAVEN â The second annual Celiac Walkathon and picnic will be held Saturday, May 14, at Wharton Brook State Park. Registration begins at 9 am; the walk begins at 10:15.
Celiac disease is a genetic autoimmune disease that affects one in 133 people although most people with it remain undiagnosed. People with celiac are unable to digest gluten, a protein in wheat, barley, rye, and oats. Treatment is adherence to a strict gluten-free diet. In addition to gastrointestinal ailments, untreated celiacs have an increased likelihood of having serious secondary illnesses, including central and nervous system diseases, and organ disorders.
The walkathon will include games and activities â including an antique fire engine for the children to climb on â and a gluten-free picnic. There also will be a basket auction. The walk loops through a scenic park on a wide, flat path.
Last yearâs inaugural walk grossed $26,000 and had over 300 participants. Funds raised in the events will be used for research and awareness.
Registration is $20. All participants over the age of 18 must register and pay the fee. Pledges made by check may be payable to the Greater New Haven Celiac Group and are tax-deductible. For more information call 203-372-8721 or visit the website www.connceliac.com.
