Senior Gold

Newtown 11, Cheshire Black 6 – Christian Beitel scored five goals and had two assists to lead the Newtown Senior A (Gold) team past Cheshire Senior A in the season opener for both teams. Tim Wheeler scored three goals and had two assists, and Kevin Canavan had two goals and one assist. Conor Collier had one goal. Jacob Dauz had four assists and won eight faceoffs. Ben Mahony and Matt Hill each had one assist. Andrew Hyland played superbly in goal, making 10 saves as Kyle O’Connor scooped up 11 ground balls.

 

Senior White

Newtown 5, Cheshire Red 2 – Jamie Bowers had two goals and Ben Collins made an end-to-end run from his defense position to score a goal in the Newtown win. Andrew Matsis played a strong game in the goal, and Andrew Golankiewicz and Kevin O’Connell provided Newtown with midfield domination.

Junior Blue

Newtown 11, Cheshire Red – Josh Gilbert had three goals and two assists, John Johnson scored three goals, Michael Lord scored twice, and Matt Vavrek had two goals and four assists in the win. The defense of Dan Sclafani, Dave Kreshpan, Drew Seymour and excellent netminding by goalie Louis Raab kept the visitors at bay. In the midfield, Andrew Cebry (one goal), James Radcliffe and Colin Morris kept the ball moving towards Newtown attackers Mike Fitzsimons (one goal) and Cory Fisher.

In-House/Juniors

North Carolina 15, Georgetown 13 – CJ Ryan scored four goals and dished off an assist and Michael Fitzsimons scored three goals to lead North Carolina. Michael Lord had two goals and three assists as Roland Stephen and Chris Arnone popped in two goals apiece. Louis Rabb had a strong game in goal with 16 saves. For Georgetown, Willie Provey scored five goals for the Hoyas with Lewis Thompson adding three and an assist. Tim Ciavara scored twice, Evan Gilchrist had a goal and two assists, Carson Leon-Gambetta chipped in with two assists, and Cory Fisher and Colin Cinder contributed a goal each.

Syracuse 17, Virginia 11 – Will Northrop had seven goals and two assists and Connor Bryne scored five times and added an assist in the win over Virginia. Kyle Vignone had three goals and four assists, Andrew Cebry had a goal and an assist, Connor Halloran scored once, and Matt Sharpe had an assist to balance out the scoring for the Orangemen. Thomas Murphy scored four goals and had an assist to lead the Virginia offense. Trey Trudell added three goals and an assist, Ryan Korth chipped in two goals and two assists, Connor Halloran and Max Nacewicz scored a goal each. Ted Benoit and Trey Trudell stopped 22 shots in the cage.

GIRLS

Senior Gold

Canterbury Jamboree –The Newtown Senior Girls competed in the Canterbury Jamboree this past weekend, sweeping through the competition with a stiff defense and a potent offense and earning wins over Brookfield Blue (13-3), Southbury (8-1), Brookfield Blue (12-3) and Redding (8-5). The defense – anchored by Hannah Glasrud, Molly Murtha, Annie Fletcher and Steph Suhoza – allowed only 18 shots on goal over four games. The offense was led by Meg Kelly, Betsy Vendel, Meghan Bridges, Haley Keane, Jackie Isabella, and Keegan Frobey, who all scored multiple times. Nicolle Waterhouse was strong in the goal.

Newtown Gold 13, Brookfield 4 – Betsy Vendel, Meghan Bridges, Lisa Vendel and Jackie Isabella powered the offense with the assistance of Meg Kelly to lead Newtown to the regular season win. Molly Murtha, Steph Suhoza, Annie Fletcher, Hannah Glasrud and Nicolle Waterhouse were strong on defense.

5/6 Gold

Newtown 9, New Fairfield 2 – Kaitlin Brophy scored six goals and had one assist to lead Newtown to a win in the New Milford Jamboree. Lilly Rodriguez had two goals and two assists as Erin Brown contributed a goal. Alyssa Vetrano, Michelle Isabella and Nicole Gindraux anchored the defense in front of Emma Glasrud, who saved three shots in her first game in goal.

Newtown 5, Redding 5 – Kaitlin Brophy scored five goals and goaltender Emma Glasrud made seven saves in the cage to lead Newtown. Maggie Atkinson, Erin Brown and Lilly Rodriguez provided assists and Liz Emerson played well.

Newtown 10, Southbury 3 – Kaitlin Brophy scored seven goals and Liz Emerson added three to lead Newtown to the win. Evelyn Fahey, Lilly Rodriguez , Erin Brown and Liz Emerson provided assists as Alyssa Vetrano, Ashley Cirone and Evelyn Fahey sparked the D.

Newtown 8, Brookfield 8 – Kaitlin Brophy scored six goals to lead Newtown. Natalie Clark and Erin Brown both scored while Ashley Cirone, Liz Emerson and Brophy provided assists. Emma Glasrud had three saves in goal.
