During a district Special Review Committee April 20, Assistant Superintendent of Schools Anne Uberti reviewed the Procedures for Challenged Materials as described in the Board of Education Policies, splitting them into a series of steps detailed below.

The procedure, listed under Policy 8-302, Selection of Library Media Resources, begins when a staff or community member voices an objection to a library resource.

Procedures for Challenged Materials:

1. The objection will be reviewed by the library media specialist and a building administrator of the school.

2. If the objection is not satisfied at the building-level, a form for requesting reconsideration shall be made available to the objector, who can file the form with the school principal.

3. The submitted form is reviewed by a special committee composed of the Assistant Superintendent, an administrator from the school, the library media specialist, and two teachers of the Assistant Superintendent’s selection.

4. Within one week after the form is filed, the Assistant Superintendent shall announce a date for committee findings to be reported to the BOE, and convey this date to the objector(s) of the book.

5. Within six weeks after the form is filed, unless otherwise authorized by the BOE, the committee will make a report to the BOE containing majority and minority opinions.

6. After the committee’s report, the Superintendent will make a recommendation to the BOE for consideration and action.

The objector would then be notified of the board’s decision.
