Tennis Teams Compete
Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ tennis team results from this past week:
The girls carried a six-match winning streak into May. Newtown beat New Fairfield, New Milford, and Notre Dame-Fairfield each by 6-1 scores April 23, 24, and 25. The Nighthawks went on the road and blanked Immaculate of Danbury 7-0 on April 29.
Top singles player Marie Ann Tomaj won all four matches, three by 6-0, 6-0 scores. She also took a 6-1, 6-0 decision against New Fairfield.
Amanda Conrod and Jen Lorenz won their matches at second and third singles. Ava Berry, Amelia Hufschmied, and Payton Bradley all earned wins at fourth singles.
In doubles play, the top team of Julia Klein and Julia Dolan won all of their competitions. Other doubles success in the second and third spots came from a variety of players: Mary Celentano, Bradley, Katrina Rosen, Julia Clark, Hufschmied, Reign Bernard, and Adisa Gjonbalaj.
The boys lost 4-3 to visiting Immaculate of Danbury on April 29. Ben Futterman earned a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at fourth singles. The second doubles tandem of Josh Parsons and Jacob Shuman won 6-2, 6-0. The third doubles team of Chris Lindsay and Milan Chand won 6-1, 6-3.
