Young Adult Notes

*Volunteer For Summer Reading: Young adults entering grade 6 and older in the fall can sign up to be a volunteer for the children’s summer reading program, which will run this year June 25 through August 16.

Training sessions will be offered for those who have not volunteered in the past on Wednesday, May 28, or Thursday, May 29, from 4 to 4:30 pm, in the children’s story hour room.  If you were a volunteer last summer, you can pick up your registration form beginning May 28.

All forms are due back by June 6 to be eligible for this summer’s program. Any applications received after that date will be put on the sub list.

 Adult Programs

*Just in time for Earth Day (and beyond), the library has coordinated a series called “Hot or Not? Some Topics in Global Warming,” which has been offering programs and presentations as well as a series of film screenings.

Most programs have been presented, but the films will continue next week with The Great Global Warming Swindle on Tuesday, May 6; Dimming the Sun on Tuesday, May 13; and Kilowatt Ours on Tuesday, May 27. All screenings begin at 7 pm.

*Come Play Chess  at the Library!

US Chess Federation Candidate Master Glenn Budzinski has started hosting chess games for all levels each Saturday at the library. Sets and boards will be provided each afternoon from 1 to 5 pm.

There are no fees or registration. Just come and play.

*Annual Meeting: The Friends of The C.H. Booth Library will hold their annual meeting on Tuesday, May 13, at 10 am, at the library.

*Book Discussions: The Non-Fiction Book Group will talk about The Wal-Mart Effect: How the World’s Most Powerful Company Really Works – and How It Is Transforming the American Economy by Charles Fishman on Tuesday, May 6, at 1 pm; Daytime Book Discussion will cover Amy and Isabelle by Elizabeth Stout on Monday, May 12, at 1 pm; and Evening Book Discussion will be about Children of Men on Thursday, May 15, at 7:30 pm. Newcomers are always welcome.

*Author Talk: The World’s Oldest Cat Blows the Whistle, with text and paintings by Sandy Hook resident Richard R. Budman, has just been released and will be the focus of our next Author Talk program, on Thursday, May 22, at 7 pm.

This sizzling expose reveals the myths about the lives of the worlds rich and famous cats and dogs. Why did Toto disappear immediately after filming The Wizard of Oz? Was Rin-Tin-Tin really “The All American Canine”?

Come meet Richard Budman for a special book signing, with proceeds from book sales that evening to benefit the new pound for Newtown.

*Book Nook Note: Mother’s Day is May 11… One great way to communicate the love and admiration you have for your mother is with the gift of a book. Beautiful gift-quality books are available at The Book Nook now.

C.H. Booth Library is open Monday through Thursday, 9:30 am to 8 pm; Friday from 11 am to 5 pm; Saturday, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm; and Sunday from noon to 5 pm. The library, at 25 Main Street, can be reached at 426-4533 or visit CHBoothLibrary.org.
