MILFORD, CONN. — Joseph Kabe Estate auction will conduct a sale Saturday, May 24, beginning at 6:30 pm, with an historical piano that played a leading role in rock and roll history.

The piano, a 1975 Yamaha CF, 9-foot concert grand — the first concert grand shipped by Yamaha to the United States — was purchased by ProPiano in San Francisco.

Used exclusively by many famous performing artists on stage and in the recording studio, the celebrities include Jerry Garcia & The Grateful Dead band, Jefferson Airplane, Jethro Tull, Joni Mitchell, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, America, Count Basie, Bonnie Raitt and Peter Frampton. Its history is fully documented.

This is an outstanding musical instrument with great bass and ivory; it has been meticulously maintained by its owner, who says, “Out of all the artists who used this piano it was Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead who used it the most on tour; in recognition of that, I will  donate ten percent of the proceeds to the Rex Foundation.” (In the fall of 1983, the Rex Foundation was established as a nonprofit charitable organization by members of The Grateful Dead and friends. It offers support to endeavors in the arts, science and education.)

Also leading the sale will be an American masterpiece by Albert Fitch Bellows (1829–1883). The painting, which was exhibited in 1882 at the Chicago Exposition, titled “The Bouquet,” 42 by 29½ inches, was purchased by the owner in 1948 at Park-Benet. It is in excellent condition and has no restoration.

From the same estate comes a rare size standing temple Buddha, 100 inches high, 93 inches without the element on top. The  Eighteenth Century figure is made of solid painted teakwood, from Burma, in the Chang style.

A rare gilt standing Buddha with inlaid pearl eyes with hands in “Calming the Waters” position indicating no fear and peace will also cross the block. It is from Thailand and is early Nineteenth Century.

Also in the sale will be elephant series Audubon prints including, “The Yellow Crowned Night Heron,” R. Havell, and “The Carolina Turtle Dove,” R. Havell.

There will also be Handel lamps, Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century furniture, Oriental rugs, paintings and prints.
