Former Newtown resident Kevin Johnstone has been sworn into the Peace Corps in Ulaanbaartar, Mongolia. Kevin is serving a 27-month commitment to teach English in the village of Orkhon Soum, a 12-hour trip northwest of the capital Ulaanbaartar. He lives in a ger, a felt tent, that has no running water. The temperature in the winter falls below -50 (without wind chill), heating is by wood stove and water is carried from the local river, and he is the only English speaker in the area.
Newtown resident Francesca Piscitelli was honored during an April 9 Leadership and Service Awards banquet at Lycoming College, in Williamsport, Penn., with the Senator of the Month Award for January. Francesca is a 2005 graduate of Newtown High School. She is currently a junior at Lycoming, where she is majoring in psychology and business.
Stacy Shpunt has been inducted into Lambda Pi Eta, the undergraduate National Communication Honor Society of the National Communication Association, on April 23. The standard for induction is a cumulative grade point average of 3.80 or higher. Stacy is a junior in the Roy H. Park School of Communications at Ithaca College. She is also a 2005 graduate of Newtown High School.
Jared Sturges, a senior at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, has been presented the Award of Distinction in Writing for his senior portfolio. Jared has served as news editor for The Echo, WestConnâs campus newspaper, and also served as an intern for several local newspapers. He will graduate this month with a bachelorâs degree in professional writing/journalism/freelance. He is the son of Patricia Andrews Murray of Bethlehem and David Sturges of Palominas, Ariz.; and the grandson of Richard and Louise Andrews of Newtown, Jean Stempel of Lenox, Mass., and the late Robert H. Sturges of Sandy Hook.
Katherine DeSimone of Newtown, who is pursuing an associate degree in baking and pastry arts from the College of Culinary Arts at the Providence campus of Johnson & Wales University, has been named to the Deanâs List for the 2008 winter term. Students must earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.40 or above to receive this commendation.
The following students of Johnson & Wales University have been named to the Deanâs List for the 2008 winter term: Allison Ragusa of Sandy Hook, who is pursuing a bachelorâs degree in retail marketing/management from the College of Business at the Providence campus; and Kaitlyn Sullivan, also of Sandy Hook, who is pursuing a bachelorâs degree in culinary nutrition from the College of Culinary Arts at the Providence campus. To receive Deanâs List commendation, students must earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.40 or above.
