NYS Tennis Academy

Makes A Racket In Newtown

Newtown Youth Services offered an April vacation Tennis Academy for seventh and eighth grade middle school students. Clinics were offered on April 15 and 17 at Dickinson Park. The program was coordinated by NYS outreach coordinator Matt Rosen and instructed by high school varsity tennis players Jason Gardarino and Matt McFadden. Twelve students participated in drills, lessons, and noncompetitive game play while learning techniques, strategies, and proper conditioning.

The energy on the courts was remarkable despite sweltering 80 degree weather on Tuesday, and blustery 35 degree weather on Thursday. Jason and Matt worked with participants on their forehand and backhand strokes, volleying, serving, court etiquette, and game play basics. Students were from Newtown Middle School and St Rose School ranging from beginner to intermediate ability.

Mr Rosen has been working to create and promote new, alternative experiential youth programs to reach out to Newtown youth who may not have safe, fun, constructive activities during school vacations.

“The youth are continually complaining that there is absolutely nothing fun to do in Newtown. And whatever would be fun, is too far and too expensive,” Mr Rosen said. Making activities personalized, close by, and economical were important factors in planning this and other programs. The Tennis Academy was a fun and exciting way for youth to develop their skills and strategies in a personalized, safe, and noncompetitive environment.
