Hawley Students

Honored For Writing

Two Hawley School fourth graders’ work was honored recently in two academic contests –– one for poetry and the other a short story.

Seamas Boyle entered a poetry contest sponsored by Instructor Magazine, that his teacher Ms Muldoon presented to her fourth grade class. Seamas’ poem was about his favorite animal –– snakes.

“It was just a regular poem about snakes,” Seamas said. “It was about a friend coming over and we acted like snakes.”

Seamas was given a second place honor in the national contest. He received a poetry book, Plum by Arthur Levine.

“I feel good. I’m happy,” he said. “I used strong verbs and a lot of good sentences and paragraphs.”

Seamas said that he likes to write at school and at home when he is looking to fill his time.

Brian Reed, a fourth grader in Ms Gallagher’s class entered a writing competition sponsored by Connecticut Writers Project, which will be published in Connecticut Student Writers Magazine.

The entry could not be more than 1,500 words. Brian decided to write a short story entitled, “My Sea Adventure,” which was about a sea monster that took him down under the water. Brian described the monster that he named Mat as tall, faint red lips, jet black, and skinny fingers.

Brian worked on the story in class and at home.

“It was a topic I could elaborate on,” Brian said. “There are a lot of different legends about artifacts.”

Brian enjoys writing because he can expand his mind.

“It’s something where you can get your thoughts down,” he said. “You can express yourself.”

Brian will attend an awards ceremony at the University of Connecticut on May 27.

“I’m happy. It makes me feel good my story was selected and other people liked it,” Brian said.
