Nat’l Orienteering Day

Will Include Public Program

DANBURY — Western Connecticut Orienteering Club will hold an open-to-the-public meet on Sunday, May 6, at Tarrywile Park, in observance of National Orienteering Day. The day is designated to welcome newcomers to the sport of orienteering.

Donna Fluegel of Wilton and Bob Auer of Bridgeport will be setting up the event. Participants will use an orienteering map and the compass to find their way across the terrain seeking orange and white flags at various land features. The features are marked on the map and act as checkpoints along the course.

Participants decide on the route to the feature and punch a score card to confirm finding the flag. In orienteering as a competition, the winner punches all the flags in the shortest time.

At Tarrywile, all standard courses, from beginner to expert, will be available. Instruction and training will also be available for beginners, as will a limited number of compasses.

The meet will begin at 10 am, and registration will be ongoing until noon. Cost is $5 per person. Tarrywile Park is at 70 Southern Boulevard, opposite Immaculate High School. Call 203-762-0737 or visit www.faculty.fairfield.edu/rdwitt/wcoc for additional information.
