REDDING – Head coach Jim Casagrande might have a good group of young players at his disposal, but right now the Newtown High School golf team has been taking a few lumps – as in a loss to Weston on Monday at Aspetuck Country Club.

The ‘Hawks were 3-4 overall, 2-4 in the South-West Conference as they headed to Redding to take on Joel Barlow and somehow stop a streak that has seen them lose three of their previous four matches.

On Monday, the Trojans – one of the Nighthawks’ arch-rivals in the SWC – played the Aspetuck Country Club course beautifully. With Tyler Kupper firing a 3-over 39 and three other golfers coming in at 7-over 43, the Trojans easily defeated the ‘Hawks, 168-189.

Ben Moore had the best performance for Newtown on the afternoon, carding an 8-over 44. Mike Hayes was second at an 11-over 47 while Greg Korotash and Mike Troy both followed with rounds of 49.

Weston pushed its record to 7-1.

The ‘Hawks traveled to Fairchild Wheeler Golf Course in Bridgeport on Thursday to take on Kolbe-Cathedral (a team which is really taking its lumps this year). On Monday, the ‘Hawks will host Pomperaug and on Tuesday will host Stratford.
