Newtowners Show Their Pride

To the Editor,

Lose the Litter Day was sunny this year, and we were pleased at the large number of people who turned out to clean up our town. The participants were truly a cross section of the community. The Cub Scouts of Den 13 pitched in on Edmond Road while the members of the Leo Club at the High School worked all over town in their tireless but fruitless quest for the golden cans. The youth group from Christ the King Lutheran Church cleaned up Dickinson Park while the grizzled veterans from the Lions Club combed the sides of Boggs Hill Road.

The event would not have been possible without support from many people and groups. The Borough let us raise the banner along Queen Street. Fred Hurley and the Highway Department provided the gloves for the volunteers and also picked up the bagged trash. Dom Posca and the Board of Education provided the bags and allowed us to use the Middle School property. The firehouses let us pile the bags on their land. The Newtown Bee helped make everyone aware of the event. The elementary schools and Saint Rose School also helped to spread the word by sending out flyers. Finally, more than 200 volunteers contributed their time and energy to removing the litter from our town’s roads.

Although we may face larger problems than roadside litter, the town’s response to this small problem was a heartening display of unity and action. I have no doubt that this same community spirit will help us overcome larger challenges that may confront us on other days. Lose the Litter Day, however, will always be the day when Newtowners show their civic pride.

Sincerely,

Jerome A. Mayer

Chairman, Lose the Litter Day
