Children’s Programs

The Story Hour session will be finishing up in the next couple of weeks and will resume again in the fall. Registration will take place in August. A summer reading program will be kicking off in June, and is open to children of all ages. More details to come.

Mrs Walker will be holding a Mother’s Day Craft Workshop on Saturday, May 13, from 11 am to noon, for children ages 6 and up. There is a $2 supply fee due at the time of registration. Please sign up in the children’s department. No phone-in registrations will be accepted, but if you have any questions regarding the workshop you may call the children’s department at 426-3851.

Adult Programs

The movie series will be continue on Friday, April 28, at 12:30 pm, celebrating “Movie Musicals of the 40s and 50s.” The next movie in the series will be State Fair (1945), a bright engaging film of a family’s adventure at the Iowa State Fair. The Rodgers and Hammerstein score includes “That’s for Me,” “Grand Night for Singing,” and “It Might As Well Be Spring.” On the Town (1949) will be shown on May 19 at 12:30 pm. All movies are free and popcorn is provided.

Paintings by Franklin Jones, the award winning artist, teacher, and author, are currently on display at the library through Sunday, May 14. Franklin Jones is highly regarded for his paintings of rural New England and his work has appeared in Yankee Magazine, Backpacker, Merrill’s Biology, Michelin’s Travel Guide, as well as numerous sporting journals. The exhibit can be found on the second floor.

The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) invites the public to attend their annual art exhibit and reception. The opening reception will take place in the meeting room on Saturday, May 6, from 2 to 4 pm. Show hours will run through May 14 during regular library hours.

“Reliving the 60s: A Transformation of Values” is a book discussion group sponsored by the Friends of the Library. They will be discussing Tim O’Brien’s powerful novel The Things They Carried, a book on Vietnam. The discussion will take place in Special Collections at 7 pm on Tuesday, May 9. All are welcome to attend. Multiple copies of the book are available at the library.

The Booth Library Book Discussion Group will be reading 84 Charing Cross by Helene Hanff on Thursday, May 18, at 7:30 pm in the Special Collections room on the third floor. New members are always welcome. You need not read the entire book to join the discussion.

The Friends of the Library are currently accepting donations for their Labor Day Book Sale. Please leave your books on the cart on the first floor.
