Its bid for an undefeated season came to an end Tuesday for the Newtown High School boysâ tennis team. Playing on its home courts, NHS took it on the chin against a tough Weston team, 4-3.
The pivotal match came early on when Westonâs Evan Gillespie upended Newtownâs Zach Miller, 6-0, 0-6, 6-4, at first singles. The result was notable in that Miller rarely loses.
Freshman Jon Perachio continued his perfect season with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alex Brandfon at second singles. Peter Stephenson defeated Justin Sherman at fourth singles, 6-3, 6-1. Newtownâs only other win came at first doubles where Bret McEvoy and Adam Ponsky defeated Andrew Meyer and Adam Bartley, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.
Three of Westonâs four victories were matches that went to three sets. First-year coach Jen Huettner expects her team to bounce right back.
On Monday, the Nighthawks rolled past Immaculate, 7-0.
