Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Event Planned In Town
Newtown will host the next Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority (HRRA) Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Event.
These are one-day events when items not accepted at local landfills and transfer stations can be dropped off for proper recycling or disposal.
All residents in the HRRA region — Newtown, Bethel, Bridgewater, Brookfield, Danbury, Kent, New Fairfield, New Milford, Redding, Ridgefield, Roxbury, Sherman, Weston, and Wilton — are eligible to visit Newtown Public Works, 4 Turkey Hill Road, on Saturday, May 7, between 9 am and 2 pm.
The protocol for the event is as follows:
*Residents must always remain in their vehicle;
*Items being dropped off are to be in the back of each vehicle prior to arrival (place before arriving at Public Works, not at the site);
*Windows are to be rolled up; and
*Drivers need to be ready to place their driver’s license against their window for proof of residency.
Workers will remove the contents and will be in full safety gear.
Smoking is not allowed on the site.
Items accepted will include paints, stains and varnishes, paint thinners and strippers; wood preservatives; resins, rosins, and adhesives; polishes for furniture, floor, and metal; cleaners for rug and upholstery, ovens, toilet bowls, and drains; swimming pool chemicals; and pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides, including lawn care products.
Also flea powder; moth balls; spot removers and dry cleaning solvents; lighter fluids; septic tank degreasers; engine degreasers; carburetor cleaners and brake fluids; transmission fluids and car waxes; waste fuels (kerosene, gasoline); full or partially full aerosol cans; rubber cement, airplane glue, and other hobby supplies; photo chemicals; chemistry sets; hobby supplies; rechargeable (N-Cd) batteries and camera batteries; and mercury thermostats and thermometers.
