Newtown High School’s softball team topped visiting Immaculate of Danbury 6-4 on April 23, then slugged past host Joel Barlow of Redding 15-3 on April 26 as the Nighthawks pushed their record to 4-3.

Against an improved Immaculate squad, the Nighthawks fell behind 2-0 in the opening inning before rallying.

Pitcher Sydney Adolfson aided her own cause with a first-inning RBI single after Ashley Hubner led off with a walk. In a three-run third inning, Katie Goyda singled and scored, Adolfson singled, Bri Pellicone drove home a run with a single, and Nicole Fisher and Caroline Gardner also keyed the offense with a walk and sacrifice.

Newtown scored twice more in the fifth when Pellicone singled and scored. Sarah Kick hit an RBI double in the frame.

Adolfson struck out 13 batters to pick up the win.

“I knew going into this that Immaculate is a very improved team,” said Newtown Coach Joanna Closs, adding that whichever team played a clean game was going to come out on top. “Fortunately, it was us.”

Errors cost Newtown in an extra-inning setback to Notre Dame-Fairfield earlier this spring. Newtown was mistake-free in the field and capitalized on a couple Immaculate miscues to pull out the win.

In the win over Barlow, Gina Lewis hit a two-run home run. Adolfson knocked in three runs, and Pellicone drove in four. Hubner, Kick, Goyda, Adolfson, Pellicone, and Lewis all multi-hit games.

Adolfson went seven innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs, striking out nine along the way.

The Nighthawk beat Brookfield 9-1 on April 28; check back online and in the May 7 print edition for details.
