Journey To Spain, France

Surrounded by family and friends, Newtown High School French and Spanish students bid their respective au revoirs and ciaos before leaving on a sure-to-be-unforgettable trip to Spain and France during their April 19–23 school break.

While the students traveled to the airport together, one group prepared for a landing in Madrid while others eagerly awaited Paris.

“I’m so excited to go!” declared French student Courtney Whaley, who was being sent off by her boyfriend and her mother, Cathy Whaley.

“I love the Eiffel Tower,” she continued. “And I can’t wait to go shopping!”

In addition to Paris, the trip will include tours of Nice and Monaco.

Courtney will be rooming with fellow French students and best friends, Sheena Fernandes and Casey Palmer.

While Sheena was born in Portugal, she said she is looking forward to her first “real” trip on her own. “It’s going to be a lot of fun!” she declared.

Jane Kondratovich looked on as her granddaughter, Spanish student Alex Helfer, boarded the bus.

“She’s going to have a wonderful time,” Ms Kondratovich declared. “I envy her!”

Describing Alex as “a grandmother’s dream,” Ms Kondratovich briefly reflected on their own travels together. “I have taken her to England,” she said, adding that she has seen much of Europe.

“But I’ve never been to Austria!” she said. “It’s going to be great for her.”

Alex’s mother, Lynn Helfer, said she was proud to see her daughter go.

“I’m very glad the board approved this trip and that they were able to go after all,” she said, alluding to the March 11 terrorist bombing in Madrid.

“Life goes on,” she continued. “This is a wonderful opportunity for Alex.”

Her father, Dave Carino, sent off Alex’s friend, Spanish student Erica Carino.

“How do I feel about her going?” he asked, wearing a wry grin. “Traumatized!” he laughed. “No, seriously, this is very exciting, a trip that is full of opportunity. I am very happy for Erica.”

Jill Neth said she envied her daughter, sophomore Lauren’s, trip to Paris.

“It’s going to be fantastic for her!” Ms Neth said, grinning brightly. “I wish I could go!”
