Fairfield University Hosts Connecticut Writing Project
FAIRFIELD â Fairfield University is hosting the Connecticut Writing Project (CWP) this summer, offering eight programs for young and advanced writers and teachers, including two sections of its popular Young Writersâ Institute.
The Young Writersâ Institute, open to students entering grades 6 through 11, allows students to explore many aspects of writing. Students will have the opportunity to talk with published writers from their area. The CWP teacher/consultants who team-teach the institute are exemplary, credentialed teachers in local schools.
This year, the institute will run two sections for grades 6 through 8 and 9 through 11 running July 1â15 from 9 am to 1 pm. Students must submit an application, writing sample, and teacher recommendation, which will be evaluated by a committee of teachers/consultants. Attendance cost is $650, which includes lunch. Transportation and partial scholarships are available.
âThe Young Writerâs Institute has been enthusiastically received by many young writers, so many, in fact, that we will be running two sections this summer,â noted CWP Director Faye Gage. âMany of the participants are returning for their second and third summers, having found their previous experiences rewarding. The opportunity to talk with published writers, to work with teachers/mentors and to share their writing with peers is what writers need and what the institute provides.â
Adult writers are invited to engage in a variety of activities designed to awaken them from âwriterâs slump,â and to encourage them to enter a new territory in a relaxed, nonjudgmental atmosphere. The Advanced Institute for Writers runs July 18â23; cost is $150 for CWP alumni, $250 for newcomers and $200 for those requiring on campus housing. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9 am to 4 pm, and, Sunday 3 to 5 pm.
CWP also offers six summer institutes designed for teachers throughout June and July, most which can be taken for graduate credit.
âThe institute for teachers provide a place where both new and experienced instructors can meet to share their successes, to reflect on the challenges of teaching literacy, and to hone their own literacy skills,â said Ms Gage.
