Altercation

Police report that John Capozziello, 52, of 35 Philo Curtis Road was riding in a motor vehicle on a local road with a middle-aged male friend early on the morning of April 22, when the two men got into an argument.

Police said Capozziello struck the victim in the face with his fists and with miscellaneous objects that were in the vehicle. The victim later reported the incident and police investigated the matter. Police said they found Capozziello to be combative.

The victim was transported to Danbury Hospital to be evaluated for his injuries, police said.

Capozziello was charged with second degree assault and with interfering with police. Police held Capozziello on bail for a court appearance later that day.

Four MV Charges

Police report they saw motorist Gail Hanna, 60, of Brookfield driving southward on Main Street, very closely behind another vehicle, at about 6:30 pm on April 24, so they stopped her to investigate.

Police said they charged Hanna with following too closely, driving under suspension, driving an unregistered vehicle, and driving without automotive insurance. Police said Hanna is scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on May 11 to answer the charges.

Buick Into Pole

Motorist Mary Bussolotti, 82, of Bridgeport was driving a 1996 Buck Park Avenue northward near 70 Eden Hill Road about 2:45 pm on April 18, when a noncontact vehicle, which was traveling southward, crossed into the northbound lane, police said.

Bussolotti then swerved to the right to avoid the other vehicle, but went onto the muddy northbound road shoulder and struck a utility pole, police said.

Bussolotti was not injured. Police verbally warned her for making a restricted turn.

DUI Arrest

Police said they received a cellular telephone call regarding a possible intoxicated motorist driving on Route 34 in Sandy Hook at about 2 am April 25. Police report that on responding to the area, they spotted motorist Frank Lis, 58, of Southbury entering Interstate 84. The vehicle driven by Lis was moving erratically, so it was stopped for an investigation, police said.

Lis failed field sobriety testing, police said. Lis was charged with driving under the influence and with failure to drive to the right, police said. Lis is slated to appear in court May 6.

Ford SUV Crash

Motorist Mark Painter, 20, of Monroe was driving westward near 277 Berkshire Road about 4 am April 23, when the vehicle crossed into the eastbound lane and then struck an embankment and four guardposts, police said. Painter was not injured. Police issued Painter an infraction ticket for failure to drive to the right and failure to carry automotive insurance.

Plymouth Vs Pontiac

 Police report an accident involving a 1992 Plymouth Acclaim and a 2001 Pontiac Sunfire in front of the Newtown Professional Center office building at 172 Mt Pleasant Road at about 2 pm April 16.

Motorist Helen Falvey, 85, of 16 Sugar Street, who was driving the Plymouth, started making a left turn from the office building parking lot onto Mt Pleasant Road, resulting in a collision with Sylvia Billings, 73, of Danbury, who was driving the Pontiac on Mt Pleasant Road, police said.

Falvey and Plymouth passenger Clarice McKay, 80, of 6 Laurel Road were checked for injuries at the accident scene by the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, police said.

Police issued Falvey a written warning for failure to grant the right of way.

Main Street U-Turn

Motorist Alexander Marchak, 68, of Danbury, who was driving a 1999 Toyota Camry northward near 45 Main Street at about 4:19 pm April 22, attempted to make a U-turn, police report.

In making the U-turn, Marchak collided with southbound motorist Maureen Mandia, 43, of Danbury, who was driving a 2000 Acura Integra, police said. The crash happened in the southbound lane.

Mandia reported pain, but refused ambulance service, police said. Police verbally warned Marchak for failure to grant the right of way.

Buick Off Road

Motorist Carmen Frisch, 63, of Danbury was driving a 1998 Buick Skylark westward on Interstate 84, near Exit 9, about 5:30 pm April 21, when while attempting to avoid striking an unidentified animal in the road, Frisch swerved and struck guardrailing along the left road shoulder, state police said. Frisch was not injured. No enforcement action was taken.

 

SUV Vs Turkey

State police report that motorist Norma Riess, 22, of Redding was driving a 1999 Isuzu Trooper sport-utility vehicle westward in the left lane of Interstate 84, west of Exit 11, about 6:28 pm April 20, when the vehicle collided with a wild turkey. The impact damaged the vehicle’s front windshield and roof, state police said.

Riess was transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries caused by broken glass, state police said. No enforcement action was taken.

SUV Rollover

Motorist Steven Buchholz, 23, of 102 Waterview Drive was driving a 1995 GMC Jimmy sport-utility vehicle southward on Hanover Road, just north of its intersection with Tamarack Road, about 1 am April 27, when Buchholz failed to negotiate a slight curve to the right and then went straight instead, crossing into the northbound lane and going off the northbound road shoulder, police said.

The vehicle struck a mailbox, a post, and two trees and then flipped onto its right side, police said.

Ambulance volunteers transported Buchholz to Danbury Hospital to be checked for pain, police said. Newtown Hook and Ladder firefighters went to the accident. The accident is under investigation.

South Main Collision

 Motorist Ann Devino, 25, of New Preston, who was driving a 2002 Honda Civic southward on South Main Street about 6 pm April 26, stopped to make a left turn into a driveway at 67 South Main Street, police said.

Motorist Mary Claire Mayer, 17, of Southbury, who was driving a 1995 Ford Taurus, struck the Honda from behind, police said. There were no injuries.

Police issued Mayer a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Rear-Ender

Motorist Gladys McLaughlin, 67, of 10 Chestnut Knoll, who was driving a 1999 Ford Taurus, was stopped at a red traffic signal on northbound South Main Street at its intersection with Glover Avenue at about 9 am April 26, when motorist Maria Braga, 39, of Danbury, who was driving a 2001 Toyota RAV-4, struck the Ford from behind, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Braga an infraction ticket for traveling at an unsafe distance.

Jeep Vs Beetle

Police report a two-vehicle accident on April 26 on Church Hill Road, near Interstate 84. Motorist Cory Peterson, 20, of Oxford, who was driving a 1990 Jeep Wrangler, struck the rear end of a 2000 Volkswagen Beetle driven by Judith Kennedy, 43, of 12 Rose Lane, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Peterson an infraction ticket for traveling too fast for conditions and failure to carry a driver’s license.

SUV Vs SUV

Police report an accident involving two sport-utility vehicles on Church Hill Road, near Commerce Road, about 8 am April 26.

Motorist Lee Moreno, 48, of 24 Farm Field Ridge Road, who was driving a 2002 Jeep Liberty westward on Church Hill Road, began to slow for stopped traffic and was struck from behind by motorist Edna Frey, 49, of 2 Echo Valley Road, who was driving a 2002 BMW X-5, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Frey an infraction ticket for traveling too fast for conditions.

 

DUI Warrant

Police report that after learning that they held a warrant for her arrest, Elizabeth Bedell, 43, of 2 Abbotts Hill Road came to the police station and turned herself in on the night of April 27. Police said they charged Bedell with driving under the influence in connection with a one-car accident on Poverty Hollow Road early on the morning of February 5.

In that accident, Bedell was driving a 2002 Audi A-4 northward on Poverty Hollow Road, when the auto veered onto the southbound road shoulder, knocked down a utility pole and then hit a large tree head-on, according to police. Bedell was transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries after the accident.

After posting $50 bail, police released Bedell for a May 13 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Sandy Hook Mishap

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Toddy Hill Road and Route 34 about 1:30 pm April 26.

Motorist William M. Smith III, 23, of Danbury, who was driving a 1991 GMC truck, was stopped at a red traffic signal on Toddy Hill Road, police said. In order to allow a tractor-trailer truck to make a left turn from westbound Route 34 onto Toddy Hill Road, Smith backed up the GMC, police said.

But in backing up, Smith backed into a stopped 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Conirose Fusco, 21, of Middlebury, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Smith a written warning for unsafe backing.

DUI Charge

Police report they saw motorist Betty J. Westerfield, 51, of Redding driving a 1999 Dodge Ram pickup truck erratically on eastbound Church Hill Road, as it was making a left turn onto the Exit 10 on-ramp of westbound Interstate 84 at about 12:40 am April 29.

Police said they stopped the vehicle to investigate and gave Westerfield field sobriety tests, after which she was charged with driving under the influence and with making a restricted turn.

After processing the arrest, police released Westerfield on $50 bail for a May 18 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Ice Cream Shop

Motorist Paul Crowell, 41, of 11 Founders Lane, who was driving a 2001 Dodge Durango sport-utility vehicle, was stopped on eastbound Church Hill Road and waiting to make a left turn into the Ice Cream Shop’s parking lot at 57 Church Hill Road at about 8:10 pm April 20, when the Dodge was struck from behind by motorist Aaron Cooper, 17, of 11 Newbury Road, who was driving a 1994 Volkswagen Passat, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Cooper an infraction ticket for following too closely.
