A Birthday Party For Popeye

BRIDGEWATER — The Friends of the Burnham Library will hold a 75 anniversary party to celebrate Popeye on Saturday, May 1. The event, which will be at the library from 3 to 5 pm, will include an informal question and answer with Brad and Marty Sagendorf, the sons of artist Bud Sagendorf. Bud Sagendorf was the sole assistant to Elzie Segar, the strip’s originator. After Mr Segar’s death, Mr Sagendorf continued to draw the comic strip for over 50 years.

The celebration will also include displays of original newspaper artwork, toys, novelty items, family memorabilia, proof sheets, and original artwork for the book Popeye: The First Fifty Years. Original artwork for the strip will be available for purchase, with all sales to benefit The Burnham Library.

Refreshments, including spinach, will be served.

The program is free and open to all. The library is on Route 133. For further information call the library at 860-354-6937.
