Dominating Performances Across The Board For Nighthawks

By Kim J. Harmon

Dominating? Yes, that seems to be a most apropos description of the kind of effort put forth this week in Newtown High School sports.

Let’s see –

Lisa Morgan went 3-0 for the softball team, pitching 19 innings while allowing exactly three hits and no runs and striking out 36 batters.

In a home-and-home series with New Fairfield, Newtown out-scored their opponents, 26-1, in registering two wins.

Not nearly as close as the score indicated, the girls’ lacrosse team put together a ferocious defensive performance and defeated Masuk, 9-5, in a key Division I contest.

The girls’ track and field team – with three wins from Alex Konneker – coasted to another South-West Conference sweep to improve to 6-0.

Dominating?

Absolutely.

SOFTBALL

Newtown 6, Joel Barlow 0; Newtown 1, New Fairfield 0; Newtown 16, Kolbe-Cathedral 0

With two innings in the book, the Newtown High School softball team had yet to score a run in its South-West Conference matchup with a historically weak-hitting Kolbe-Cathedral team on Monday afternoon.

Now, banging out hits and scoring runs has been a bit of a problem for the Lady Nighthawks from time to time … but before head coach Jay Edwards and assistant coach Lin Hertberg could start scratching their heads and muttering under their breath the ‘Hawks starting hitting.

And hitting.

And hitting.

A 16-run explosion in the bottom of the third inning lifted the ‘Hawks to a mercy-rule shortened 16-0 win, improving their record to 6-4 overall and 4-0 in the SWC. It was the locals’ fourth win in a row after suffered through a four-game losing streak.

“If only we could save this kind of magic for the upcoming tough games,” said coach Edwards.

Lisa Morgan fired a perfect game, registering her fifth shutout of the season. She fanned 13 batters and was so dominant that only one ball was hit into fair territory. Also the hottest hitter on the team (with a .464 average), Morgan helped herself out by going 3-for-3 with a double and RBI.

The offense – which had scored just 10 runs in Newtown’s first six games – broke open the game in the bottom of the third. Lisa Alberico opened the floodgates for the ‘Hawks with a single to lead off the frame (and then coming up twice more in the same inning) and then Christina Wolf (2-for-3 with a triple and four RBI) and (Megan LaFlamme 3-for-4 with an RBI) broke those gates off their hinges.

Alberico keyed that rally, but played an even more vital role in a 1-0 win over New Fairfield on Friday morning.

With the score tied in the top of the fourth, catcher Ashley Ferris led off with a single and Alberico – as has been common – served as a courtesy runner for Ferris. The junior promptly stole second and advanced to third on a pitch in the dirt, eventually scoring on an infield single by Jenna Van Waalwijk.

“We don’t win that game if Lisa doesn’t perfectly execute that steal and then advance to third,” said coach Edwards. “She doesn’t get a lot of at-bats, but she has been on base more than anyone on the team and has scored more runs that almost everyone on the team.”

Alberico may be just 2-for-9 at the plate, but she has four stolen bases (tops on the team) and five runs scored (second-best on the team).

In that win over New Fairfield, Morgan fired a two-hitter, striking out 12. After the win over Kolbe, Morgan dropped her earned run average to a miniscule 0.64 while limiting opposing hitters to a paltry .136 average. In 66 innings of work, she has whiffed 80 batters.

Last week, the ‘Hawks blanked Joel Barlow, 6-0, as Morgan nailed down a one-hitter, striking out 11. Van Waalwijk was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI while Emily Blewett and Wolf each collected a pair of hits and an RBI.

The locals will host Notre Dame on Friday and will visit Bethel on Monday before returning home next Wednesday for a tilt against Immaculate.

It looked as if everything was working perfectly as the Newtown High School baseball team – with a well-executed squeeze bunt in the third inning – crafted a 2-0 lead over Joel Barlow last Wednesday afternoon in the Nighthawks’ 2005 home opener.

But then the whole thing went sour.

Head coach Carl Strait has seen it before (most recently in a 12-10 win over Weston in which the ‘Hawks blew a six-run, sixth-inning lead) and could do little to stem the tide of an eight-run, fifth-inning avalanche and watched as the ‘Hawks dropped an 8-2 decision to the Falcons.

But the youthful ‘Hawks – with six sophomores and six juniors – rebounded eight off of that dismal loss with a 22-1 shellacking of New Fairfield on Friday and a 4-0 blanking of New Fairfield on Monday on the back-end of a home-and-home series.

With the mini two-game winning streak in hand, the ‘Hawks improved to 6-3 overall and need just two more wins in the next 11 games to secure a spot in the CIAC state tournament for the first time since 1997.

In the big win over the Rebels last Friday, Dave Marcucilli clubbed a grand slam for his first varsity hit and fueled a 21-hit attack. Ryan McGrath and Mike Tibbetts collected three hits apiece as Steve Vichiola banged out a pair of hits and drove in four runs.

McGrath, Brian Shimko and Joe DeVellis all drove in three runs. Steve Marks (3-1) pitched five strong innings, walking two and striking out two, and gave way to McGrath, who finished off the Rebels in the sixth and seventh.

In the follow up on Monday afternoon, Marks returned to the hill and recorded his fourth win with a six-inning, five-strikeout performance. Shimko doubled in a run as Pete Oggeri, Alex Dolan, Vichiola and DeVellis all collected base knocks.

McGrath put in another solid relief effort, striking out the side in the sixth inning.

The ‘Hawks were in Stratford on Thursday to face Bunnell and will be home on Friday to host Notre Dame. The locals will be on the road next Monday to face Bethel and will return home on Wednesday to host Immaculate.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Newtown 19, Fairfield Warde 11; Masuk 7, Newtown 5; Newtown 9, Masuk 5

With its ranks depleted somewhat because of spring break, the Newtown High School girls’ lacrosse team suffered a dismal loss to Masuk last Saturday.

But the Lady Nighthawks – back at full strength on Tuesday – made up for that loss on the back-end of a home-and-home series with Masuk. Meg Regnery, Rachel Maley and Moira Collier scored two goals apiece while Karli Beitel, Casey Frobey and Kim Solheim added one apiece to lift the ‘Hawks to a 9-5 win.

“I think a lot of it (the loss on Saturday) had to do with the weather conditions,” said Beitel. “But we were also missing a few players last week and we were happy to be back together today. We were ready.”

The win boosted the ‘Hawks to 4-3 overall, 3-1 in the South-West Conference (1-1 in Division I). The ‘Hawks fell to Joel Barlow back on April 12, but if Masuk also succumbs to the Lady Falcons (in a game scheduled for May 5) then the ‘Hawks will secure a spot in the SWC Division I championship game.

It was a costly win for the ‘Hawks, however, as Regnery (with a team-high 27 goals) suffered what appeared to be a serious knee injury early in the second half. After spending several minutes on the field, the senior – 12 goals shy of breaking the school’s all-time girls’ scoring mark – was led to the sidelines.

At that point, the ‘Hawks had crafted a 6-2 lead in the game and did it with very aggressive defense and a patient offense. Regnery opened the scoring early in the first half and Collier followed with a high, backhanded shot past Masuk goaltender Lauren Johnson.

Casey Frobey put the ‘Hawks up 3-0 off a restart and then Regnery – unguarded outside the crease – took a nice dump off pass from Maley and put the ‘Hawks ahead, 4-0. Masuk finally got on the board, but then Solheim and Beitel scored their goals to give the ‘Hawks a 6-1 lead at half.

The Newtown offense was a little flat in the second half and losing Regnery did not help. But after the Lady Panthers notched a couple of goals to pull within three, Collier and Maley gave the locals some breathing room with back-to-back scores.

With 14 seconds left to play, Maley finished off the game with her second goal.

Goaltender Kerrie Canavan had another outstanding effort in the cage, making 10 saves to preserve the win.

Before the loss to Masuk last Saturday, the ‘Hawks pounded Fairfield Warde, 19-11, as Regnery scored eight goals. With that effort, she moved past Caitlin Collier into second place on the all-time scoring list.

Moira Collier scored four goals in the win and Maley notched three. Beitel and Brianna Berg popped in two goals apiece.

The locals will travel to Bethel on Saturday and will then return home next Tuesday to host Lauralton Hall before visiting New Milford on Thursday.

GOLF

Newtown 160, Bunnell 163

After opening the 2005 season with three consecutive losses, the Newtown High School golf team earned its first win of the season and needed to shoot some pretty good scores to do it.

In their three losses, the Nighthawks have scored 192, 182 and 172 and the downward trend continued last Thursday in a 160-163 win over Bunnell. Dave Freeston earned co-medallist honors with a 39 while Kevin Troy and Matt Ronan both carded rounds of 40. Steve Oberstadt added a crisp round of 41.

James McIntosh led the Bulldogs with a 39.

The ‘Hawks visited Notre Dame on Thursday and will visit New Milford on Monday (in a match rescheduled from this week) and Bunnell next Wednesday.

BOYS LACROSSE

Masuk 11, Newtown 5

The Newtown High School boys’ lacrosse team has tried to find some offensive rhythm in the first couple of weeks of the 2005 season, but has found little success.

One of the most explosive and highest-scoring offenses in the state over the past few years, the Nighthawks have struggled to get the ball into the cage and those struggles remained last Thursday in an 11-5 loss to Masuk.

The ‘Hawks are averaging fewer than six goals a game, with a season-high of 10 in a season-opening loss to New Milford.

Grant Speer, Brendan O’Connor, Travis Speer, Mike Conroy and Jeff Bell all scored goals against Masuk, but the Panthers received four goals from Terry Stroz and three more from Tyler Haversat to capture the win.

The ‘Hawks fell to 1-4.

They returned to the field on Thursday with a visit to Brookfield and will host Ridgefield on Saturday night (7 pm) at Blue & Gold Stadium before hosting Pomperaug next Tuesday.

BOYS TRACK

Weston 85.5, Newtown 64.5; Newtown 104, Pomperaug 46

There are those who have looked almost exclusively at New Milford, with its stable of strong distance runners, as the top contender for the South-West Conference track and field championship. But there are other teams beginning to stake their own claim.

When Marcus Tracy took the handoff in the final turn of the 4x100 relay of a tri-meet Monday afternoon, Weston – on the inside lane – had a sizeable lead. Even though Tracy made up virtually all of that distance, he fell a tenth-of-a-second short.

It was a sign – and not a good one – as Weston went on to tag Newtown with its first loss of the season, 84.5-64.5.

Tracy was a triple winner for the ‘Hawks, earning a first-place finish in the 100-meter dash (11.1), 200-meter dash (22.6) and 400-meter dash (49.4). Meanwhile, Pete Dittmar grabbed a first-place finish in the 3,200 meters (10:07.06) as Tyler von Oy took first the shot put (47-3) and Ryan Peters took first in the javelin (147-1).

The ‘Hawks will return to the track on Monday to host Notre Dame.

BOYS TENNIS

Newtown 7, Notre Dame 0

After losing its first three matches, the Newtown High School boys’ tennis team has bounced back with back-to-back wins.

The latest came on Monday afternoon at the high school as the Nighthawks eased their way to a 7-0 sweep to improve to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the South-West Conference.

Drew Adamek had perhaps the toughest match of the day, working through a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles over Will Teplan. Chris Martin, Chris Meier (straight sets) and Max Margulies all had singles wins.

“Drew showed character by staving off comebacks in each of the two sets to beat a talented, stubborn opponent who had extended Matt McFadden the year before,” said head coach Marty Margulies.

The duos of Mario Roehrs/Dave Wilkins and Baj Ahtchi/Kyle Kearney recorded doubles wins while the ‘Hawks picked up a default doubles win. For Kearney and Ahtchi, it was their first varsity wins.

The locals hosted Masuk on Wednesday and visited New Milford on Thursday. They will be in Brookfield on Monday before returning home next Wednesday to host Immaculate.

GIRLS TENNIS

Newtown 7, Notre Dame 0

The 10-day spring break layoff did little to dull the senses of the Newtown High School girls’ tennis team. The Lady Nighthawks improved to 5-0 with a clean 7-0 sweep over Notre Dame on Monday afternoon.

The locals did not lose a single set and only conceded 13 games out of the 97 played.

Lauren Nemeth was a 6-0, 6-0 straight set winner over Katie Makara at No. 1 singles and that pretty much set the tone for the rest of the day. Tara Ryan, Michelle Serock and Sarah Salbu recorded singles wins while the duos of Jill Tanner and Emily Fields, Kristene Salbu and Ashley Gabor, and Jenna Moser and Maxx Zimmer recorded doubles wins.

“The girls are getting stronger and more comfortable as a team,” said head coach Maureen Maher. “The conditions (on Monday) were very windy and cold, but the girls hung in there and played some great tennis.”

The girls hosted Masuk on Wednesday and visited New Milford on Thursday. They will return home on Monday to host Brookfield.
