Margaret T. Mahoney

Lover Of Nature And Animals

Margaret T. “Peggy” Mahoney, 92, of Newtown died in her sleep at Bethel Health Care on April 14.

She was born on July 1, 1913, a daughter of Michael McQueen Mahoney and Margaret (Keane) Mahoney. A lifelong resident of Sandy Hook, she was educated in Newtown schools and was for many years a maid at the Old Sandy Hook Hotel.

She is survived by her nephews, Thomas Mahoney of Sandy Hook and Joseph Mahoney of Newtown; and two great-nieces, Michelle Mahoney, RN, of Newtown and Army First Lieutenant Elizabeth Mahoney of Seoul, South Korea.

Ms Mahoney had shared remembrances of the day President Franklin D. Roosevelt drove through Sandy Hook Center in an open touring car on his way to the Groton Boat Races and that she once saw the actor Don Ameche when he stopped at the hotel to make a phone call. Her face lit up when she recalled how handsome he was. She enjoyed walking in the woods and loved animals.

Services and burial in St Rose Cemetery will be private.

Contributions in memory of Ms Mahoney may be made to Canine Advocates, PO Box 236, Newtown CT 06470.

Arrangements by the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown.
