 Newtown High School Lists Scholarships That Are Available

The Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application.

The Career Center believes students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships. If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-HELP; the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060; or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or 703-276-0100.

 SCAN Lawrence Newquist Award — The Society of Creative Artists of Newtown will provide this award to a graduating high school senior from Newtown High School who will attend college as an art major in one of the disciplines that includes, but is not limited to, graphics, art, architecture, photography, etc. A portfolio is necessary and will be reviewed by the committee.

Interested students should see Mrs Dutchick in the Art Department for details. Interviews will be held on Monday, May 8, at Newtown Meeting House.  

Newtown Youth Services Youth Advisory Board — This organization is offering a scholarship to a graduating senior who has given something back to the community through volunteer work and community service. The Youth Advisory Board will determine the amount. Applications are due to Youth Services by 5 pm on May 5.

Stamford Symphony Orchestra Scholarship Competition — High school seniors from Connecticut are eligible to compete for this music performance scholarship award program. The first place prize is a $5,000 scholarship renewable for four years and second place is a $1,000 renewable scholarship. Applicants must intend to apply as music performance majors to accredited conservatories, colleges or universities.

Applications can be downloaded from StamfordSymphony.org and must be received by the symphony by September 26.

Newtown Bridle Lands Association, Inc — is offering a scholarship in the amount of $500 to a high school senior. The student must be a current resident and have a parent or guardian who is a current member of The Newtown Bridle Lands Association, Inc. The student must be entering a field of study leading to a degree in equine science, veterinary science or the environmental sciences including but not limited to agriculture, animal husbandry, ecological studies or forestry. Applications are available in the Career Center and the application and accompanying essay are to be submitted by May 1 to Newtown Bridle Lands Association, Memorial Scholarship, PO Box 3083, Newtown, Ct.
