The Newtown Historical Society hosted an open house and living history demonstration about the Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard (2GHG) on Sunday, April 18.

Members of the 2GHG had a tent outside the Matthew Curtiss House Museum, 44 Main Street, to educate the public about the history and importance of the horses and horse guard.

A variety of antique items were on display, including a 1929 colonial uniform that members wore for 31st United States President Herbert Hoover’s inauguration, a uniform from the 1970s, a helmet from the 1880s, a McClellan saddle from World War I, and a doughboy helmet from the Yankee Division.

Corporal Steve Chapman of 2GHG spoke with the public about the items and photographs on display, many of which came from his personal collection.

There was also a TV with a slide show presentation set up for people to enjoy.

Those looking to support the 2GHG can participate in an upcoming trail ride on the 2GHG grounds, 4 Wildlife Road, on the morning of June 6 (rain date June 13).
