For a group of young athletes who do not have the opportunity to play for a high school rugby team Aspetuck Valley Rugby Club has given these young men and women the opportunity to play not only rugby but rugby at its highest level.

Aspetuck has become a nationally ranked team. This year it includes seven Newtown players, three on the varsity team and four youth players. Not only did the varsity club win the State of Connecticut Championship in 2019 but it is enjoying being ranked in the top ten nationally in 2021.

Over the last four weeks, Aspetuck has traveled to Pennsylvania where the team dominated a top-20 nationally ranked team, Berks County Rugby Club 42-0. A couple of weeks later Aspetuck traveled to North Carolina and played the number one team in the country, the Charlotte Tigers Rugby Club, and lost a tough fought game 38-21. The following day saw Aspetuck run up the score on the South Carolina state champs, the Wando Rugby Club, 45-0. After that weekend Aspetuck went from eighth in the nation to seventh.

The following week Aspetuck once again traveled out of the northeast to Indianapolis, Indiana where the team played the number three team in the country the Royal Irish Rugby club. Aspetuck led in the final minute but lost 21-19.

Aspetuck is looking for U13 and U14 players to fill out its roster for its middle school and youth teams. Visit www.aspetuckrugby.org for more information. Aspetuck holds most of its practices in Newtown, on Pecks Lane.
