Kathleen M. Yomazzo (November 29, 1942–April 16, 2025)
With great sorrow, we announce that Kathleen (Kay) Maloney Yomazzo of Newtown and Jupiter Fla., passed away on April 16, 2025, at age 82 following a long and courageous fight against cancer.
Kay’s life was dedicated to her family, her faith, and her friends. She was a devoted wife for sixty years to her husband, Mike; a loving mother to her three children; a proud grandmother to her five grandchildren; and an adored sister, aunt, and great-aunt. Kay’s Catholic faith formed the cornerstone of her life. She was a faithful parishioner and volunteer at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Brookfield and St Jude Catholic Church in Tequesta, Florida.
Kay was born to James and Mary Gertrude Maloney in Bronx, N.Y. She graduated from Ladycliff College in Highland Falls, N.Y., and taught elementary school in the Mt Vernon, N.Y., school system for several years before devoting her life to being a full-time mom. After her children started school, Kay returned to teaching elementary and special needs students in both the Brookfield school system and at St Joseph’s Catholic School, and pursued graduate level coursework at Western Connecticut State University. She was an ardent volunteer for her children’s schools as well as for myriad local organizations that ranged from Meals on Wheels to the Newcomer’s Club, the Girl Scouts, and many years of teaching CCD.
Her passion was traveling. She and Mike traveled extensively throughout the world, from Singapore to Iceland to Australia and all points in between. Her favorite destination was Ireland, where she embraced her family’s heritage. She traveled there several times, including one very memorable trip with her sisters. Closer to home, one of her greatest joys was spending summers in Cape Cod, reading at the beach.
She and Mike made friends all over the world, but she particularly cherished her long-time friends from Brookfield. She loved to entertain friends and family, whether it was an impromptu pizza party or a five-course holiday dinner, always creating a fun and welcoming space for all.
Kay is survived by her husband Mike; her daughter Susan Tinston (Mike), and her sons Michael Yomazzo (Karen) and Mark Yomazzo (Melissa); her grandchildren Colin, Andrew, Meghan, Sophia and Amelia; her sisters Helen and Joan; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her parents, her sister Mary, and her brother James.
Kay’s life can be summed up in the words of Mother Teresa: “do small things with great love.” She never forgot a birthday, an anniversary, or a special occasion. She was endlessly generous with her time, talent, and treasure. She was quick to reach out to others in difficult times, always with patience and compassion (and often some much-appreciated humor.) Her steadfast and selfless devotion to the care of her husband Mike exemplified the more than sixty years of love they shared. Her strength and fighting spirit were extraordinary, especially throughout the last few years of her life. She will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 8, from 5-7 pm, at Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street in Danbury.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 9, at 10 am, at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, 1 Obtuse Hill Road in Brookfield. Burial will take place at a later date.
