Newtown High School’s boys’ lacrosse team defeated host Pomperaug of Southbury 18-1 on April 18, and Tucker Garrity’s three assists (to go along with a trio of goals) made him the program’s all-time leader with 134 assists.

Aiden Coleman recorded five goals and had a pair of assists, Jeffrey Garrity netted four goals, Brennan Mayer had a goal and four assists, Brett Pierce scored a goal and added two assists, and Connor Breslin had a goal and an assist. Kyle Shirk and Jake Bulkley both scored goals, and Brandon Manka and Alec Budd each had an assist. Tanner Stergue won 20 faceoffs.

Tucker Garrity and the Nighthawks bounced back from a 9-7 setback at Mamaroneck of New York on April 20 with a 16-3 triumph over visiting Masuk of Monroe at Blue & Gold Stadium on April 23. The all-time assist leader had two goals and an assist against Mamaroneck and had four goals and a whopping seven helpers in the Masuk game.

“It’s probably the most unselfish award you can get because you’re constantly setting your teammates up,” said Newtown Coach Scott Bulkley, adding that, at the same time, it is very much a team accolade, given the players need to catch the ball and finish opportunities for the assists to be recorded.

In the game at Mamaroneck, Tucker Garrity, Coleman, and Manka all scored twice, and Pierce scored. Jeffrey Garrity had two assists.

Against Masuk, Coleman had four goals and an assist, Mayer and Manka both scored twice, and Jeffrey Garrity netted one goal and had three assists. Stergue won 15 of 20 faceoffs, and Will Swierbut won three draws. Andre Sokk led Newtown with nine ground ball scoops.

Newtown improved to 6-2, its only setbacks coming against tough out-of-state competition on the road. Bulkley noted that the team is only starting to move toward being at full strength. While many of the players are fully up to speed, both Garritys were sidelined with injury until recently, Shaine Luzietti just returned, and other player have been out with injury.

“We’re bridging that gap as fast as we can and trying to get everybody up to date,” the Newtown coach said.

Following a visit from Immaculate of Danbury on Thursday, April 25 at 7 pm, Bulkley’s Hawks have consecutive tough nonconference tests as Guilford visits Saturday, April 27, at 5 pm, and Glastonbury comes to town on Tuesday, April 30, at 7 pm. Then, back to South-West Conference action with another challenging tilt as defending conference champion New Fairfield visits on Saturday, May 4, at 7 pm. These contests are all at Blue & Gold Stadium.
