Therapeutic Riding Horse Show On May 18
BEDFORD, NY â Pegasus Therapeutic Ridingâs 27th Annual Horse Show will be on Sunday, May 18 from 10 am to 3 pm at Coker Farm in Bedford, NY. Open to the public, and free, the event showcases the horseback-riding skills of Pegasusâ physically, emotionally and developmentally challenged riders, many of whom have been diagnosed with autism, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy or similar conditions.
Riders spend the two months leading up to the show attending weekly lessons at one of six Pegasus locations throughout Putnam, Westchester and Fairfield counties. During the lessons, instructors guide the riders through a series of equine-assisted activities that yield therapeutic benefits. These benefits result from the way in which a horseâs gait closely resembles our own and has a positive effect on the riderâs muscle movement and/or cognitive functions.
Equine-assisted programs are appropriate for riders with a wide range of physical challenges. Even riders who appear to have âoppositeâ conditions can experience the same success.
In addition to the physical and developmental changes equine-assisted activities cultivate, they also enhance self-confidence, foster social interaction and instill in the riders the importance of teamwork â with their instructors, with each other, and of course, with their mounts.
All participants â from eager beginners just learning the basics to skilled equestrians performing intricate routines â will receive an award of some kind. Events and activities such as a costume parade, face painting and barbeque will also take place.
The show will also mark a significant philanthropic milestone. For 25 years, the Richter family has generously hosted the event at their Coker Farm facility. The crowd typically numbers in the hundreds, and that does not include the four-legged guests and their attendant trailers, tow vehicles and other paraphernalia.
