Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

*LIKE TO PAINT? Linda Casey will be offering art classes in oils or acrylics starting Thursday, May 1, at 1 pm.

*LIFE LINE SCREENING Workshop on Thursday, May 15, at 1 pm. A daylong actual screening will be held on Friday, June 13. Appointments are necessary.

*HEALTHNET is sponsoring a bowling tournament at the center on Monday, June 2, at 1 pm, using a Wii, an interactive virtual game on the TV. You don’t need to know how to bowl! Call to 270-4310 to sign up.

*Meteorologist ART HORN will speak on “History of Weather” on Wednesday, June 4, at 1 pm.

Day Trips

*Visit FIESTA DINNER THEATRE to see Grandma’s Getting Married, on Wednesday, May 21, along with a luncheon. Depart at 10 am; $78 per person.

*American Ballet Theatre presents SWAN LAKE. Depart 9:30 am on Saturday, May 31, to New York City and enjoy lunch and the ballet Swan Lake. Cost is $150.

*A TASTE OF GERMANY at Blackhead Mountain Lodge and Country Club in the Northern Catskill Mountains departs 9 am, Thursday, June 5; $76 per person.

*See JERSEY BOYS on Broadway, featuring Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons music, on June 11 and have lunch at Rachel’s Restaurant. Call the Senior Center for reservations; $182 per person; depart at 9 am.

*STRAWBERRIES, CHOCOLATE AND WINE on Wednesday, June 25, with lunch at Torches on the Hudson restaurant and then onto Baldwin Vineyards for a gourmet afternoon of desserts and wine tasting. Departs at 10:15 am; $76 per person.

*Back by popular demand is a trip to Hunts Landing on July 16 to see An American Salute. A great way to celebrate the Independence Day.

*FREE COMPUTER LESSONS are given every Monday and Tuesday at 3 pm.

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*BOWLING at Brookfield Lanes for Senior “Fun Bowl,” Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 3 pm.

*CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday morning from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE TIME on Fridays at 1 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend. We supply the video and popcorn.

Monday: AM pinochle, hatha yoga, exercise, PM computer classes, chorus group.

Tuesday: AM pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, bowling, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts.

Wednesday: AM exercise; PM bingo, crafts.

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM bowling, walking for fitness, board games.

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM movie time, knitting, cards.

 

Menu For Week of

April 28–May 2

Monday: Hot open roast beef sandwich on white with gravy, mashed potato, diced carrots, Bartlett pears.

Tuesday: Portuguese chicken with peppers and onions, brown rice, French green beans, wheat dinner roll, grape juice, seasonal fresh fruit.

Wednesday: Minestrone soup with crackers, seafood salad plate served on a bed of lettuce with tomato and marinated beet salad, French dressing, Portuguese roll, chocolate chip cookie.

Thursday:  Veal roulade with gravy, mashed potato, California blend vegetables, seedless rye bread, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

And for planning ahead—

Monday, May 5: Cinco de Mayo: Taco bake served with tortilla chips, lettuce and tomato, sour cream, taco sauce and cheddar cheese garnish, fiesta corn, sherbet.

Tuesday, May 6: Stuffed salmon with dill sauce, rice pilaf, Oriental blend vegetables, wheat bread, cling peaches.
