Child Anglers Invitedâ
Youth Education Day
Along Banks Of Pootatuck
The Candlewood Valley Chapter, Trout Unlimited (CVTU) will host its first Youth Education Day on Saturday, May 3, in Sandy Hook along the banks of the Pootatuck River.
The event is open to children ages 8 to 18 years old.
Chapter volunteers and friends from the community will teach children the basics of fishing for trout with a fly rod, help them with their hand at tying a fly, and will explore the streambed to understand the food chain in this habitat.
âFor several years, the chapter has been active in helping to restore trout habitat in Newtown and nearby towns,â CVTU President James Belden said. âIt feels natural for us to extend our activities to help a new generation develop a love for the sport of fly fishing.â
In addition to the main activities, a representative from the Rowledge Pond Aquaculture will stop by with examples of brook, brown and rainbow trout. John Cumisky, owner of Valley Angler tackle shop, will also be on hand to show parents how to set up a rod for catch and release-friendly spin fishing.
âItâs great to have the opportunity to support this event,â said Michael Burton, a local builder who is providing access through his property on Washington Avenue. âMy family has a strong connection with the outdoors and this special river.â
Chapter board member and organizer of the event Steve Zakur said, âIn todayâs fast-paced world, itâs hard to find time to teach our children about the outdoors and sports like fishing. We hope that this event will jumpstart the skills needed to provide parents and children with a lifelong appreciation of fishing and trout habitat.â
Parents and children must preregister for the event. Those interested in learning more details or registering can visit the Candlewood Valley TU website at www.cvtu.org.
