Children’s Programs

*Harry Potter Midnight Madness: Young adults ages 10 and older (or entering grade five in the fall), can sign up to purchase a copy of the new Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which will be distributed in June during our Harry Potter Midnight Madness party. Copies of the new book will be available at the stroke of midnight on June 21 if you have pre-ordered your copy. The books are $20 each.

The party itself will be on Friday, June 20, from 9 pm until just after midnight, and all young readers are welcome. You do not have to purchase a book to attend the party, but you do have to attend the party if you want to purchase the book. All orders must to placed and paid for by April 29. Stop by the children’s department to sign up for an evening of magic, food, fun… and your copy of Harry Potter Book 5. Character costumes are encouraged.

*Mother’s Day Craft Workshop: Marie Walker will conduct a Mother’s Day Craft workshop for children ages 6 and older on Saturday, May 3, from 1 to 2 pm.  A $2 material fee is due upon registration, which needs to be done in person at the library. No phone registrations will be accepted.

*Young Adult Stamping workshop: Young adults in grades 5-8 are invited to attend a stamp art workshop conducted by Barbara Shohet, on Monday, May 5, from 4 to 6 pm, in the library board room. Barbara will provide all of the supplies and give instruction on how to make professional looking greeting cards, stationery, gift boxes and more. Sign up at the library or call 426-4533 to register. A $5 material fee is due the day of the workshop. No younger siblings, please.

Programs

*There will be one final book discussion for April Morning, at the Senior Center on Monday, April 28, at 1pm.

*The British are Coming (Back) to Newtown: Step back in time and celebrate Tavern night at the library on Friday, April

25, from 7 to 10 pm, with British and Colonial re-enactors. Two floors of the library will be full of a variety of exciting activities including singing, dancing, and games, for the family (activities are best for children over age 8).

Get into the spirit of the evening and come dressed in costume. If you’re able to bake a dessert for the evening or have questions please call the library.

*Re-enactment at Fairfield Hills: On Saturday, April 26, beginning at 9:30 am, the Delancey Brigade, a British re-enactment group and some of their Colonial friends, will be congregating on the small field across from the John Reed Intermediate School for an encampment at Fairfield Hills. Open hearth cooking, 18th Century medicine demonstrations, a Cavalry exhibition, plus a variety of craftsmen will be on hand. Please stop by during your busy Saturday routine to see what is going on.

Adult Programs

*Please note the Intermediate Computer Class for Saturday, April 26, has been cancelled.

*Job Search Strategies: Janice Weinberg of Career Solutions will be at the library on Monday, April 28, at 7 pm, to talk about “Innovative Job Search Strategies.” She is the author of How to Win the Job You Really Want. The program is free and refreshments will be served. Please RSVP by calling library.

*Free Blood Pressure Screening: Ashlar of Newtown sponsors a free blood pressure screening in the genealogy room on the last Wednesday of every month. This month the screening will take place on Wednesday, April 30, from 10 am to noon. Appointments are not necessary, just stop in.

*Agnes DeMille at the Library: Carol Schweid will be performing her one woman show, Agnes DeMille Dancing at the Library, which highlights the life and times of Broadway star Agnes DeMille, on Friday, May 16, at 7 pm.

Call the library at 426-4533 to register for any of its programs or for additional information. The library’s winter hours are Monday through Thursday from 10 am to 6 pm, Friday from noon to 5 pm, Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm.
