SOUTHBURY â Head coach Jenn Huettner lamented the fact that she failed to have senior Mike Troy wear his lucky pink shirt for the 2003 Newtown High School golf season opener against Joel Barlow on Monday afternoon at Heritage Village Country Club in Southbury, but the dark blue shirt he did wear seemed to work out just fine.
On a warm and sunny afternoon, Troy carded a 3-over par 39 to lead the Nighthawks to a 174-176 win over the Falcons. A day later at the Newtown Country Club, under much more threatening skies, Troy fired a 2-over 35 to lead the âHawks to a 147-161 win over Brookfield.
The âHawks are 2-0.
Against Barlow, Troyâs round of 39 helped to offset an even more sparkling effort of 2-over 38 turned in by Chris Kim. Ben Moore carded a 7-over 43 and Jon Cain shot a 9-over 45 to spark the âHawks. Owen Beams held up the back end of the top four Newtown finishers with an 11-over 47.
On the Barlow side, Pat Owen carded a 9-over 45, Brendan Hartney shot a 10-over 46, and Pat Canny finished with an 11-over 47.
On Tuesday, Troy wasnât the only one carving up the NCC course. No, Greg Korotash and Ben Moore both shot rounds of 4-over 37 while Owen Beams took up the rear with an equally impressive 5-over par 38.
On the Brookfield side, Paul McCluskey carded a 4-over 37 and Chris Howley added a 6-over 39, but the scores tailed off after that. Greg Totillo finished with a 9-over 42 and Ryan Smith finished with a 10-over 43.
The âHawks were scheduled to host Brookfield (at Heritage Village) on Wednesday and Bethel (also at Heritage) on Thursday and then will host Stratford (once again at Heritage) on Monday.
A visit to Crestbrook Park, to battle Watertown, will follow on Wednesday and a trip to Grassy Hill, to take on Foran, will follow on Thursday, May 1.
