Members of The Garden Club of Newtown (GCN) recently descended upon The Victory Garden, where they continued preparing their rows for spring planting.

More than a dozen dedicated gardeners visited the Fairfield Hills location, where they worked on the club’s four rows. Six cedar bed frames were delivered recently, followed by a great pile of rich garden soil.

Gardeners are confident the raised bed installation will discourage garden weeds and pests and maximize plant vigor and yield. Fresh, organic herbs and vegetables produced each season are donated to our neighbors in need.

During the 2023 growing season, GCN donated more than 400 pounds of produce to FAITH Food Pantry, Nunnawauk Meadows retirement community, and Newtown Senior Center.

The club is planning a Plant Sale, to be presented at C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street, on Saturday, May 4, from 9 am until noon. The sale will include native plants including annuals and perennials, herbs and vegetable seedlings, all grown and donated by club members.

Proceeds will go toward the purchase of additional raised beds, soil, seeds and seedlings.

Those raised beds will be delivered and installed on a late May Opening Day at the Victory Garden.

Scholarship Final Reminder

With funds from the annual Wreath & Gift Sale, The Garden Club of Newtown announces the availability of a scholarship for the 2024-25 academic year.

This scholarship, for majors in environmental studies, will be awarded to either a graduating senior high school student or a current college student at an accredited college or university.

Students must be residents of Newtown.

Applicants are asked to provide a personal letter including their career goals and the reason they are pursuing a degree in environmental science, a letter of recommendation from an educator or guidance counselor, all grade transcripts, and proof of residency (copy of driver’s license or voter registration card).
