Luncheon Gave FISH Drivers The Opportunity To Meet Each Other
Drivers for FISH of Newtown gathered recently to enjoy getting to know one another, tell of their experiences, and partake of a truly âFISHâ luncheon. On the April 17 menu were goldfish, starfish, and shrimp cocktail, followed by a creamy fish chowder, poached salmon, salads, and crisp breads.
Colleen Honan, president of the group, provided the delicious dessert and presented Ellen Parrella with a cyclamen plant to thank her for hosting the affair.
Since 1968 FISH drivers have been taking patients, who are Newtown residents and have no other way of getting there, to doctorsâ offices, to the hospital, to dentists, to labs, to therapeutic rehabilitation centers, and to other medical appointments, and home again. FISH volunteers use their own cars and receive no reimbursement but truly enjoy helping out their neighbors in a time of need.
Because FISH of Newtown drivers make their arrangements directly with the patients they are about to drive, they (the drivers) rarely have the opportunity to meet one another. Patients, on the other hand, may very well have met most, or all, of the regular and substitute drivers.
That was one reason the recent luncheon was held â to give FISH of Newtown drivers the opportunity to meet each other and socialize.
Volunteer drivers are always needed to fill out the very busy driving schedule. Interested parties should call Mrs Honan at 426-0714 or Mrs Parrella at 426-6470 to learn more of the requirements of becoming a FISH driver or a FISH substitute driver.
