On Saturday, April 12, the members of Newtown Underwater Search and Rescue (NUSAR) sponsored an Open House event that featured a tour of the facilities and vehicles, a diver in a diving tank, a silent auction, NUSAR clothing, and homemade baked goods.

Founded in 1989, NUSAR is a professionally trained all-volunteer team of highly committed individuals who provide water-related emergency help in Newtown and the surrounding communities in Western Connecticut.

The volunteer team conducts monthly training drills on topics to support water-based rescues above and below water, recovery of submerged vehicles, and victim rescue. Training topics include such activities as “search patterns for missing swimmers, night diving, boat diving, ice diving,” and an “annual vehicle recovery drill.”

Guests at the Open House remarked, “It’s absolutely amazing what these people do as volunteers and such a blessing for our town,” “I had no idea that such comprehensive training was taking place year-round,” and “This is the most exciting event our family has been to this year.”

During the event, Newtown Lions Club presented NUSAR with a check for $500 to support the efforts of the organization.
