Newtown High School’s softball team got back into the win column with an offensive outburst — two dozen runs to be exact — against visiting Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport on April 18. The Nighthawks swung heavy bats en route to a 24-2 triumph over the Cougars, putting the skids on a three-game losing streak.

This marked the second time this spring that the Nighthawks have plated more than 20 runs, also scoring a 21-2 victory over Darien in the opener.

It didn’t take long for the bats to get hot, although it was six walks in the opening inning and five more plus two hit batters in the second that jump-started the scoring. Newtown plated five runs in the first inning and a baker’s dozen in the second to put the game out of reach and send it to a run-rule, five-inning decision.

Jackie Moccio doubled twice, singled, walked, drove in two runs, and scored four times. Katie Goyda had two hits, including a two-run double, and scored three runs.

Ryssa Swanson had three hits, including a two-RBI double, knocked in four, and scored three runs. Kendra Saunders belted a two-run double, drove in three runs, and scored three times.

Natalie Horn had an RBI double, narrowly missing a home run when her second-inning blast hit the top of the fence in left-center field, and scored three runs. Nicole Fisher had two hits, two runs batted in, and a pair of runs scored.

Newtown fell 8-4 at Pomperaug of Southbury the day before. Horn had two hits and three RBI as the Hawks seized a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning. Pomperaug scored twice in the fifth and six times in the sixth inning for the comeback win.
