Run4Hunger To Benefit FAITH Food Pantry On May 11
The second annual Run4Hunger-Newtown, benefiting FAITH Food Pantry, will take place on Saturday, May 11, on the campus of Fairfield Hills. The race starts at 8:30 am, with on-site registration beginning at 7 am.
Those interested in running or donating may visit [naviga:u]www.run4hunger-newtown.com[/naviga:u] for more information and to register. Registration is $30 per person and three canned/non-perishable food items the morning of the race. Each participant will receive a race shirt and a medal, with the winners of each category receiving a trophy.
FAITH Food Pantry has been serving the needy in the Newtown area for the past 34 years. Its mission is to provide groceries to area residents in need. FAITH — a nonecumenical entity, its acronym stands for Food Assistance, Immediate Temporary Help — is a completely volunteer organization that staffs the pantry on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week and assists those in need with select food and sundries and keeps the shelves stocked as best it can.
Approximately 30 percent of families in Newtown are eligible for assistance from FAITH Food Pantry. This is 30 percent too many, according to race officials, who are looking for assistance in supporting the cause.
The run is being managed and organized by the Newtown Knights of Columbus, St. Virgilius Council 185, in conjunction with “At Our Gate,” a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization.
Last year, [naviga:u]more than 125 runners/walkers enjoyed a beautiful Saturday morning[/naviga:u] to benefit the food pantry. Justin Halmose, a junior at Newtown High School, won the inaugural event.
