‘NEW ENGLAND PAINTED FURNITURE’ IN STURBRIDGE, MASS. MAY 9–11 w/1 cut

avv/gs set 4/23 #736906

STURBRIDGE, MASS. — The Historical Society of Early American Decoration (HSEAD) will present an exhibition “New England Painted Furniture, Plain and Fancy,” during its annual meeting May 9–11, at Old Sturbridge Village and the Sturbridge Host Hotel and Conference Center.

On view will be New England painted furniture, country painted tin, bronze stenciling on tin and wood, freehand bronze, theorem paintings, reverse painting on glass, gold leaf work and other handcrafted pieces. All objects are either authentic antiques or items society members produced from authentic early American patterns.

The society was founded in 1949 in memory of Esther Stevens Brazer, an authority on early American decoration of homes and the objects in them. Through painting, research, education and the publication of books and articles, members of the society strive to keep the techniques used by American forefathers alive.

The Sturbridge Host Hotel and Conference Center is at 366 Main Street. The exhibition is open to the public Friday, May 9, from 3:30 to 11 pm; Saturday, 8:30 am to 11 pm; and Sunday, 8:30 am to noon.
