How can we help make our criminal justice system more effective?

Sarah Gutbrod: “Statistically speaking, most people in jail are there on drug charges. We need to make our prisons more rehabilitative. We need more drug counseling.”

Luis Vega: “We need to put more money into schools instead of in building jails.”

Jameisha White: “We need to feel comfortable protesting discrimination when we see it.”

Sadie Ball: “There are an increasing number of women, many mothers, in our jails. There is also a lot of abuse against women in prisons, women getting beaten and raped. We need better surveillance.”

Rachel Eastman: We need to make sure sentences fit the crime. For example, we shouldn’t have someone go to jail for years on a parking violation!”

Kerrie Canaban: “A lot of mothers in prison have children, and these mothers are kept in prisons 500 miles away from their children. We have to help make it possible for these moms to get clean, get out [of jail] and take care of their kids.”
