National Day Of Prayer Event Planned For May 5
Thursday, May 5, will be date for the countryâs 60th observance of the National Day of Prayer since Congress unanimously declared an annual observance in 1952.
That Thursday evening, local residents will gather for National Day of Prayer event in The Alexandria Room at Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street. The event will run from 6 to 8 pm and all are welcome.
The 2011 NDP theme is âA Mighty Fortress Is Our God,â based on Psalm 91:2 (âI will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trustâ). There will be a series of readings from Scripture and prayer for the nation in seven major areas of influence: government, church, military, family, education, media, and business.
Last yearâs program included people from various professions and public service, Boy Scouts, military, clergy from area Catholic and Protestant churches, and a chaplain from Garner Correctional Institute. This yearâs program will be similar.
The National Day of Prayer enables residents to recall and to teach the way in which the countryâs Founding Fathers sought the wisdom of God when faced with critical decisions. It is estimated that 30,000 NDP events were attended by two million people across the nation last year. A proclamation is issued each year by the President and by the governors of all 50 states.
The evening is being coordinated by a small committee of Newtown residents from various churches using the theme and guidelines of the National Day of Prayer Task Force.
