PHILADELPHIA, PENN. â A collector of people large and small, portraits specialist Elle Shushan entertained friends, colleagues and customers during Antiques Week in Philadelphia at her stately rooms in The Phoenix, the landmark Georgian Revival residence overlooking Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
The dealer, who arrayed nearly 200 miniatures in a by-invitation-only viewing, ticked off sales of works by John Wesley Jarvis, George Chinnery, William Lovett and Christian Greiner, among others. Especially sensational were Raphaelle Pealeâs tiny likenesses of Dr Lyman Spalding, a co-founder of Dartmouth College medical school, and Elizabeth Coues Spalding, his wife.
Shushan is working with Philadelphia collectors Robert and Kathy Booth on the 2009 Philadelphia Antiques Show loan exhibition, âPatriots and Presidents: Philadelphia Portrait Miniatures, 1750â1860.â
