Super Stop & Shop

Police said that Gordon Winer, 50, of Easton, allegedly walked out of the Super Stop & Shop supermarket at Sand Hill Plaza late on the night of April 13, pushing a shopping cart containing store items for which he had not paid.

Winer then left the cart outside the store and drove away, police said. Super Stop & Shop alerted police of the incident.

Police who investigated the incident later found Winer and charged him with criminal attempt to commit fifth degree larceny. Fifth degree larceny involves the theft of between $250 and $500 worth of goods.

After processing his arrest, police released Winer on a promise to appear April 28 in Danbury Superior Court.

Moving Violations

Police report that at about 7:16 pm April 15 on Queen Street, they stopped motorist Lindsay A. Pramuka, 23, of 29 Castle Meadow Road for not having a front marker plate.

After investigating, police charged Pramuka with failure to display a marker plate and with driving while under suspension. Police released Pramuka on a promise to appear April 29 in Danbury Superior Court.

Fairfield Hills

Police report that on the night of October 27, 2004, they had issued an infraction ticket to Paul W. West, 19, of Fairfield, and to three other people, for allegedly trespassing at Fairfield Hills while the core campus was closed. Police said that they had charged West with simple trespassing, an offense which carries a $92 fine, which is payable by mail.

However, West failed to respond to that ticket, police said. Consequently, a judge issued an arrest warrant for West.

On April 17, Fairfield police were questioning West in connection with another matter, when they learned that Newtown police held an arrest warrant for him.

Newtown police then charged West with failure to respond to an infraction and also with the original charge of simple trespassing.

After processing the case, Newtown police released West on $92 bail for an April 29 court appearance.

 

Bridgeport Man

At about 1:25 pm on April 16, police spotted motorist Richie Ortiz, 33, of Bridgeport, driving on Queen Street and knew that Ortiz’s driving privileges had been suspended, police said.

Police said they then stopped Ortiz to investigate and arrested him on a charge of driving while under suspension.

Ortiz was scheduled to appear in court May 5 to answer the charge.

Six Charges

Police said they stopped motorist Antwain Love, 25, of Bridgeport for nearly causing a motor vehicle accident, when Love allegedly failed to yield at a stop sign on Swamp Road at its intersection with South Main Street at about 6:20 pm April 16.

After investigating, police arrested Love, charging him with failure to obey a stop sign, driving while under suspension, misuse of marker plates, possession of stolen marker plates, driving without automotive insurance, and driving an unregistered vehicle.

After processing Love’s arrest, police released him on $250 bail for a May 3 court appearance.

Drug Arrest

At approximately 9:30 pm April 16, police encountered John T. Savoie, 41, of 5 Cottonwood Trail parked in the parking lot at 5 Queen Street, the site of the former Grand Union supermarket.

After investigating, police arrested Savoie on charges of illegal possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and simple trespassing.

After Savoie posted $100 bail, police released him for an April 29 court appearance.

Audi Vs Dodge

Motorist Carol Upshur, 43, of 6 Old Stream Road, who was driving a 1999 Dodge Caravan minivan westward on Sugar Street about 1:55 pm April 15, slowed to make a left turn into a commercial driveway at 153 Sugar Street, police said.

Westbound motorist Nancy Hayes, 53, of 14 Boggs Hill Road, who was driving a 2002 Audi A-4 behind the Dodge, then braked and swerved, but the Audi struck the rear end of the Dodge, police said.

The Audi then went off the right side of the road and hit some tree branches, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Hayes a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Ford/Mercury

A two-car accident occurred on Mt Pleasant Road, near the Bethel town line, about 12:17 pm April 14, according to police.

Motorist Howard Franson, 76, of Watertown was driving a 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis westward, police said.

Motorist Timothy Targett, 30, of Danbury, who was driving a 1994 Ford Taurus eastward on Mt Pleasant Road, then attempted to make a left turn into the driveway at 174 Mt Pleasant Road, resulting in a collision between the two vehicles, police said.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Targett to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said. Targett received an infraction ticket for making a restricted turn.

Toyota Off The Road

Motorist James Wilkins, 17, of 27 Taunton Lane was driving a 1993 Toyota Camry sedan westward on Mt Pleasant Road about 11:22 pm April 15, when he fell asleep at the wheel, police said.

The Toyota then veered across the eastbound lane of Mt Pleasant Road near the eastern entrance to Tory Lane, police said. The auto knocked down a street sign and then struck several small trees. Wilkins was not injured, police said.

Police issued Wilkins a written warning for failure to drive to the right.

Church Hill Collision

Eastbound motorist Melanie O’Connell, 44, of 64 Butterfield Road, who was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban sport-utility vehicle, was stopped and waiting to make a left turn into a driveway at 45 Church Hill Road at about 11:57 am April 15, when an eastbound 1997 Dodge Avenger driven by Steven Drolet, 19, of 29 Riverside Road drove into the rear end of the Chevrolet, police report.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps staffers evaluated Drolet but found no injuries, police said. The Dodge received heavy front-end damage in the impact.

Newtown Hook and Ladder firefighters went to the accident to handle a minor automotive fluid spill. Police issued Drolet an infraction ticket for following too closely.

Wasserman Way

While stopped at a red traffic signal on eastbound Wasserman Way about 5 pm April 17, motorist Steven Carota, 20, of Haskell, N.J., who was driving a 1999 Ford F-350 pickup truck, backed up and struck the front end of a 1999 Toyota Solara driven by Kenneth Miller, 21, of Woodbury, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Carota a written warning for unsafe backing.

Seven Charges

Police said they arrested a Sandy Hook youth on seven charges April 20, after he was found to be driving an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) on Bennetts Bridge Road in a manner unsafe to himself and to two other people.

Police said they attempted to stop ATV driver Jordan Rancourt, 17, of 36 Bennetts Bridge Road at about 4:20 pm, but he fled the area. Police said they later found Rancourt and arrested him.

Police arrested Rancourt on two counts of violating ATV regulations, two counts of driving an unregistered motor vehicle, two counts of reckless driving, and one count of engaging police in pursuit. Reckless driving is a serious motor vehicle charge.

 After processing Rancourt’s arrest, police released him into the custody of a parent. Rancourt is scheduled for arraignment on the charges May 4 in Danbury Superior Court.

Warrant

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Ulysses Carr, 20, of Hamden turned himself over to police at the police station on April 20, and was charged with failure to appear in court and with criminal trespassing.

Police said the trespassing charge stems from a September 28, 2004, incident. Carr posted $500 bail and was released for a May 4 court appearance.

Moving Violations

On April 20, police charged motorist Angelo Efthimiatos, 35, of Danbury with driving while under suspension and with driving an unregistered vehicle. Efthimiatos posted $100 bail for a May 6 court appearance.

Sandy Hook Altercation

Police said they went to 14 Osborne Hill Road in Sandy Hook on April 20 in response to a report of a dispute.

Police said Scott Alan Mas, 44, of 14 Osborne Hill Road, and Richard Reeves, 50, of 69 Engleside Terrace, had become involved in a verbal dispute, which escalated into a physical altercation.

Police said they charged each man with breach of peace. Both men were released from custody and are scheduled to appear in court May 10.
