Stop Underage

Drinking Week

Next week April 24–30 is Stop Underage Drinking Week in Newtown. First Selectman Herb Rosenthal will be issuing a proclamation and there will be several activities taking place at the high school. Newtown Youth Services’ student group WIRED (We Invite Rethinking about Engaging in Drugs and Drinking) will be sponsoring a surprise event at the beginning of the week (Call if you want details) as well as a special Movie Night on Saturday, April 30, from 7:30 to 10 at the NHS cafeteria. They will be showing The Incredibles as well as a newly taped public service announcement.

The public service announcement was planned and sponsored by Newtown Youth Service and the WIRED group. It will be a 30–45-second spot regarding the negative consequences of underage drinking. The PSA will also be shown at the town hall theater at a later date. Contact Community Service Program Manager Nancy Anderson at NYS at 270-4335 for more information.

Other school activities will take place next week, such as the Mock Crash on Tuesday and some activities planned by the SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) group. Newtown Youth Services is not sponsoring the school activities. Contact Judy Blanchard at NHS 426-7646 regarding details.
