Sign Up Now To Help With ‘Independent Living Day’

Is it possible to have fun and work at the same time? It is if you are working with friends and helping someone out. The theme of the upcoming Independent Living Day is “Many Hands Make Light Work.”

Newtown Youth Services is sending out a call to anyone and everyone who wants to help a senior citizen on Saturday, May 7, to sign up soon because time is running out. There are both morning and afternoon work sessions, which include either breakfast or lunch, if a half day is all you can spare. Some people sign up to do both shifts, which means breakfast at 8:30 and home by 3:30. Meals and group formations will take place in the lower level of the Newtown Meeting House at the flagpole.

Although most workers range in age from 10 to 18, all ages are welcome. Each work crew needs an adult driver or two to go along, and younger siblings often join in as well. It is a great chance for families to get involved together.

Some of the crews will be doing much needed yard work, such as raking, trimming bushes, and planting spring flowers. Others may help with spring cleaning, move lawn furniture out into the sun, do painting, or wash windows. All of these jobs help the senior homeowner or resident to continue living independently at home. Middle and high school students earn community service hours for their work.

All interested young people or adults can call Newtown Youth Services at 270-4335 to sign up, and get a friend to sign up too, for the 6th Annual Independent Living Day.
