School Officials Did Right Thing
School Officials Did Right Thing
To the Editor:
After reading letters from Kevin and Phyllis Braun concerning the actions taken by Dr Evan Pitkoff and the Newtown Board of Education, I am astounded with the message they project to the schoolchildren of Newtown.
Their early letters were vehemently critical of any and all school officials with regard to the Sabrina Post issue, obviously with no research on their part whatsoever. A knee-jerk reaction at best.
The most recent letter, after Ms Postâs arrest by Newtown Police, would have us believe that being suspected of a felony is OK as long as it involves less than $3,000, and you are well liked. Dr Pitkoff and the Board of Education did exactly what we hired/elected them to do. Protect our children and the Newtown taxpayers. Once the evidence built up against Ms Post, there was no choice but to remove her from her position at Newtown High School. This matter is now much more of a police and legal matter than it is a school matter.
Like Dr Pitkoff stated in The Bee, Ms Post is presumed innocent until proven guilty. But, in the end, this may prove to be a valuable lesson for our children. No amount of money, popularity, or fame should place us above the law.
Our school officials are not the embarrassment to our town, they are an asset in this case.
Sincerely,
Tom Catalina
