Rooster Rally Set For June 18 Along Main Street

Saturday, June 18, will be a big Tercentennial Day on Main Street as residents and visitors have the opportunity to enjoy, showcase, celebrate, honor, or display many versions of the town’s famous rooster.

Main Street from the Veterans’ Monument to the flagpole will be festooned with rooster paraphernalia, from famous renditions of the illustrious rooster on top of The Meeting Hose steeple to others in the form of jewelry, plates, drawings, decorated ceramics, a ten-foot-high display rooster, an assortment of family pets from Rhode Island reds to other cocks, renditions by the Girl Scouts, a full display of elementary school rooster poster drawings, and. Of course, the new Chamber of Commerce rooster mascot. This will be the day for Newtowners who love roosters to do their thing.

The event will take place from 11:20 am to 2 pm, with Sunday, June 19, as a rain date. In anticipation of a large crowd, the Chamber of Commerce will be distributing more than 1,000 flyers. There will be “Celebrate the Rooster” posters in all the local store windows.

Former Police Chief Michael Fekete is the honorary chairman. Celebrate the Rooster coordinators are Tom Catalina and Mae Schmidle.

In addition to various exhibits and displays, there will also be many drawings, refreshments, and giveaways. A number of organizations and groups and families already are working on their exhibits and displays, among them the Chamber of Commerce, the Children’s Adventure Center (coordinating the poster contest), Newtown Savings Bank, the town clerk’s office, the Rocking Roosters square dance club, the Girl Scouts, Newtown Parks and Recreation (with the biggest rooster in town), the Newtown Woman’s Club, the Newtown Visiting Nurse Association, the Parent Connection, the C.H. Booth Library, the town historian, and many others.

Flyers are being distributed to help residents to sign up.
