Rights And The Pursuit Of Happiness

To the Editor:

In a response to Carol Recht’s letter to the editor entitled “Our Rights Derive From the Word of God,” there is one fact that Carol overlooked when studying the Declaration of Independence to find an answer to the gay marriage “Catch-22” if you will. She looked over the last unalienable right endowed to us by our Creator. Which is the right to the pursuit of happiness. We also forget the fact that these rights apply to everyone. Not only the straight community of the world.

Marriage and unity is the happiness that gay people intend to pursue and who are we to play God and decide who they should and should not marry. If we are using the argument that these rights are endowed to us by our Creator, then I must use the rebuttal that God endows everyone of His children these rights. Many preach that God loves all, but how can you back that up, if it seems that He has taken rights away from homosexuals. The purpose of the Declaration of Independence is to create an egalitarian nation where all men are created equal. If we are to suppress the rights of others and put them below ourselves, doesn’t it seem we should be putting the same prejudice towards race? And doesn’t this behavior pertain directly to Nazi Germany where many homosexuals were killed for their orientation. God and His followers preached tolerance not intolerance and this is what we should be preaching to our fellow Americans.
