Gardening To Encourage Birds

The April meeting of The Garden Club of Newtown will focus on birds.

Guest speaker John Longstreth, who is the director of Bent of the River Audubon Center in Southbury, will speak about gardening to encourage birds. His presentation will include bird photographs mostly taken at the Audubon Center in Southbury, and will explain how to create habitats that will encourage birds.

Mr Longstreth will also discuss trees, plants and shrubs that can be used to attract birds to a yard, and will include guidance on what is supportive of birds as well as what is not in their best interest in terms of health and well-being.

Mr. Longstreth grew up in Fairfield. He went to college and graduate school in California and worked in banking before deciding on a career change and getting a graduate degree in forestry from Yale.

He has been with the Audubon Center in Southbury for over four years.

The public is invited to attend the lecture, which will be at 1 pm on Tuesday, April 26, in the Olga Knoepke Memorial Room of Cyrenius H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street in Newtown.

Admission is free and registration is not required. For more information call 270-1108.
